Listing my Property

I've shown my house a few more times, mostly just to neighbors who are curious or interested in the place. I believe that everyone wants it, that it is truly a special property, but that the times are difficult and so that's put the kibosh on people's hopes. It's been fun to finally meet my neighbors, after having waved at them on the street for 20 years!

I've posted some pics of my house here. I'll put this link over to the right, in my Links listing as well. I'll also be adding a link to my Realtor, who will be listing the property after we do the paperwork tomorrow. I'd hoped in the back of my mind to sell it by myself, but... LOL I am sort of relieved that I didn't, when I think about all of the legal stuff and paperwork that one has to do.. and that I don't know the first thing about!

I've had company for the past almost a week. John from Tucson came out with my tan Honda and he left this morning with my white one to take it back to Tucson. While he was here, we saw the sights, dodged raindrops and wind gusts, visited with Annette and Steve, Suzanne and Mary Elizabeth, played Backgammon and Dominoes, and enjoyed good eats.

Yesterday, we went to the historic West Baden hotel and to nearby French Lick, Indiana. When you visit that link, be sure to click the Virtual Tour at the top. John and I didn't see the rooms, but did enjoy the atrium and the lobby areas. What a place!

We checked out the casino, and John got lucky in the slots, leaving with more than triple the amount that he started out putting in. Ok, so it was the 2 cent machines! LOL! And then we hit the buffet at the French Lick Springs Resort, completely enjoying every bite we ate! This resort area is a real treasure here in southern Indiana.

Weather has been gorgeous today, with a few white fluffy clouds and lots of 70° blue sky. I hope that it is this way all across the country for John's travel.

Jack's doing great, keeping in close contact with me through all of this, via Verizon. He's making good progress on Al and Donna's new deck, which I know will be a wonderful thing for them. And, while I don't usually talk about future in here, I absolutely cannot wait to be with him again! -Ü--Ü-

Showing my House

Yep.. I showed it today. I sort of think that they must teach something in real estate school that goes beyond, "Buy my house! Please!" Ok well, so it didn't go that badly. I probably should have spent more time assessing his needs and convincing him that my house fulfilled them. Instead, I just told him about the house and all the cool things that I'd done to improve it. Then we looked at the garage and walked the land. It was cool walking out there. I had not walked the land for a couple of years. He's going to get back to me by the end of the week.

The other guy who was interested I called today, and he asked the price. After he picked himself up off the floor he said he didn't think he could afford that, and then he said that he'd get back with me in 2 days. So Friday, if I don't have money in my hand, I'm going to be calling my favorite Realtor and listing the place.

The house does look pretty good. I cleaned bathrooms today and got the rest of the stuff out of the living room.
I still have to clean the patio furniture that's on the deck. It has green stuff growing on it. Actual moss, I think.

I made up the guest bed with actual sheets, so that John (from Tucson) can sleep there while he's visiting. (He's coming to trade cars for me. Annette's going to have my 2002 CRV and I'm going to have the 2007 one... in Tucson!)

I have not eaten dinner yet, and it's after 8. I was thinking about going out for dinner to kind of celebrate having shown my house, but sort of chickened out. I guess that it counts that I thought of going out, right?

Jack called and told me that all the Big Rapids/Tucson ladies (including his soon-to-be-ex-wife) were going to a movie together and he had said, "Gee it's too bad Janee's not here or she could go too." That was met with eye rolls, he said.

I'm not sure why I have to know about things that I'm not invited to. In general, if there is something I could tell that cannot help but could hurt, I won't tell it. I wish that people would afford me that same courtesy. Oh well.... How boring would the world be if it were populated by only people like me! LOL!

Michael's Voice

I loved Michael's voice. Of course, the things he said nearly always made me grin, but just the sound of his voice was soothing and warm. For a time before he died, he had stopped talking much, and then he stopped altogether.

And then after Michael died, I had a hard time remembering what his voice sounded like. I could hear the little mumbling "bih fih bih" speech that characterized his last days. And I could remember what he had said, and how he said it, on our phone answering machine, but I couldn't hear him saying anything else. I suppose it's normal to want to sort of bottle up the good memories, so that I can put them away, so it's been frustrating to me, to have this one important aspect of Michael that I could not retrieve.

Well, this morning as I was awakening, I lay in bed and I could suddenly hear Michael's voice again! I heard him first on the phone, saying, "I'll prescribe an antibiotic for you..." That's something that I'd hear him say frequently. And "Is there a pharmacist near you?"

Then I heard him say, "I love you," the way he said it when it was just washing over him anew. And I could see him, sitting across from me at the California Pizza Kitchen, saying just that.

Now, I can hear all of the things. I hear his laugh. I hear him say "I can't even believe it!" I hear him call me "Mommy," and I hear him taking to Maddy and Eddie. I'm not sure how common it is to lose a memory of someone's voice, to miss it so, and then to get it back, but what a joy!

Found it!

For those of you who know me very well, you know that, besides the fact that I've been living in a 23' motorhome, I'm also using the water in the house. This is because I'm still suffering with a water leak in the RV, when it's pressurized or when the water pump is on. I've used SOME water in the RV, for dishes and washing up, but having the water dripping out of the bottom of the RV has been unsettling enough that I have not wanted to use the RV water.

I'd had the RV up to Camping World, Greenwood, to get it fixed, and they had tightened some fitting, but it continued to leak after that. I'd looked around and around, but had not been able to find the source of this leak myself.

Well, last evening, it was cool enough that I was sitting in here with the windows closed. I was back in the back, dressing for bed, when I noticed that familiar drip-drip sound. I thought that it sounded like it was INSIDE the RV! So out comes my trusty Mag-Lite, and I set about looking for the search of this dripping!

Right along, I suspected that the leak was near the water heater, because it seemed to be dripping from that region on the outside. So I took out my lower drawer, under the clothes cabinet. There was the water heater, the water pump, and some plastic pipes, and it was wet under there! I could still hear dripping, but could not see a source.

So, with my flashlight trained on that area, I reached up and flipped on the water pump. And there before me sprang up the cutest little fountain you've ever seen! One of the plastic pipes that comes out of the water heater, a little elbow piece, has a tiny cut in it, probably 2 mm long. And water has been spraying out of there!

Today I went and asked at my favorite plumbing supply place what I should do to fix it temporarily, till I can get the RV to a competent RV repair facility. They sent me to Kleindorfer's Hardware, and the fellow there sold me a small bottle of Oatey All-Purpose Cement for PVC pipes. After getting it home and reading all the cautions on the label, of course I'm scared to try to DO anything with it, but.. I have it, just in case I get up the courage.

I went to the PO for my mail, and was delighted to find checks! My "economic stimulus" check finally came, along with a Verizon rebate check. These I took to the bank, and combined them with some other funds to buy a CD. It's a piece of paper, and I can't seem to figure out how to get it into my CD player, but I'm working on it.

A grocery run and a visit to Amos at the trash/recycling station finished up my errands.

Before I did errands, I walked up the mountain this morning, and it seemed easier than normal. Maybe it's because of the ribs that I had for supper last night! On my way back down, I stopped and had a talk with Tim, who lives between the two hills. Nice fellow who has two tailless cats, one who, if he had a tail, would look frightfully like Eddie.

Gray Skies

At least it seems like the rain has stopped for the time being, but the sky is gray and the air is cool -- just 67°! While I know that we need the rain around here, I do so prefer sunny days. ;)

Today I went to the mall early to do my walk, since it was still raining. I walked fast, as is my inclination when I'm walking the mall. I also took all the steps 3 at a time, which gives me a little workout for my rock-hopping muscles. Everyone else at the mall walks in pairs or 3's, but no one else walks fast enough to keep up with me, so I'm content to walk alone. Now.. when Jack's with me, that's a different story, because I'm panting to keep up! (Soon! Soon!)

When I returned home, I took advantage of the cool temps to work in the garage. I have just a few things that will go to Tucson with John when he comes to trade cars with me next week, a few things for D to pick up, my big shop vac, and my fine, big paper shredder, both of which I will need again when I have a house, so I'll have the movers take those to Annette's, after the house is sold.

There are now two toads living in the garage, and probably a snake. I found a freshly shed skin, that's just about 30" long. The toads are cute, and I'm careful not to get too close to them when I'm moving around in there. The larger of them has been there for several weeks now. The tiny one I saw for the first time just today.

And so I moved a few things into bags and into my car to go to the dump and the Trading Post tomorrow. And I broomed and vacuumed and spiffed the place up. I realize that it's a garage, an OUTbuilding, and so doesn't have to be spotless, but, I've always taken pride in having it as clean as I can get it. Now, with all the junk gone, it's much easier to clean!

I dumped the paint into a couple of deep bin lids, so that, with the increased surface area, it'll hopefully dry a bit faster. I just hope that the toads don't get curious about it! I know; I worry too much!

And then, this afternoon, I've been just chilling -- doing email and mostly playing my online games. I did some Sudoku from the USA Today site at http://puzzles.usatoday.com/sudoku . And I played -- this is embarrassing -- the Bubbles game at http://www.widgetbox.com/widget/bubbles-game . I worked myself up to a score of 103,740, just in case you want to try to top me. I've added those links to my Links list at the right! ---->

The Sounds of Early September

This time of year is one where I tend to reflect. And my reflections are often in a particular color, or to a particular sound track. Today it's hot and humid, with that rainified feeling in the air. And the cicadas never did stop their night song. In fact, they've been sawing their legs together for several days now, seemingly without stopping.

Other sounds include the hum of a distant lawn mower, that hopeful sound of a small airplane that just took off, and the airy breath of my computer's fan. The cat's snoozing, quietly now.

And I just came in 7th out of 90 people playing Wordsplay at http://www.wordsplay.net. I consider it a win, if I place in the top third with this group, and I won't let myself end a session unless I'm in the top half. But these are powerfully good players, so I have to put on my best game face to place in the top tier. The game is like Boggle, where you make words by stringing together letters that are adjacent to each other. Great fun, and I would like to think that I'm staving off dementia in the process.

Yesterday I spent the better part of the morning working in the garage, assembling trash to take to the dump. This time it included cans of dead paint, which I had let dry. Some of the paint still is not dry, and I'm not sure what to do with that when I go. The hazardous waste people would not take it.

There was also some wood scraps and a piece of moldy old drywall, which I had to break apart to fit into an orange bag. I'm not sure why we had kept an old piece of drywall, even had it been new when we first stored it, which I'm sure it was. *I* don't hang drywall. Michael didn't hang drywall.

The house is looking pretty spiffy now. I went around and took a few more photos, and I've written a bit of a description of the house. You can find this at http://www.myjanee.com/house/about.htm . I need to polish the description, I realize, and post my price in there. I also need to make a list of what goes with the house, or what I am willing to let go with the house.

Ah.. now I have the pitter-patter of rain on my roof!

Labor Day

Jim, it was great to see you and Patty, too, and I love that art you bought! I am feeling quite chipper, so I'm happy to look that way. ;)

Today's Labor Day, but I won't talk about it much, since the day is still going on. I will say that I've been to campus to walk and enjoyed that. It's a beautiful day, and all the floral displays on campus are resplendent. I took the steps by the Union 3 at a time (!) and feel myself getting stronger.

The only aspect of the walk that was not great is that I was missing Maddy fiercely today. I kept trying to tell myself that it was better, because she was not there trying to go after the squirrels and chipmunks, but.. that didn't work.

Yesterday was fun. Annette came down with her grandson, Aaron's son Matthew, who is a year old. While the cherub mostly screamed in his playpen, Annette and I worked on cleaning up the kitchen in my house. We scrubbed the cabinets inside and out, cleaned the island top, and cleaned the light fixtures. We got a good start on the floor, too, though I have a bit to go on it. Word of advice: Never buy a kitchen floor that has grooves in it.

We went to Michael's and invested in some more flowers for the living room, and they look grand. We hauled the table back up onto the deck, and, once it's cleaned, it'll look good.

So I'm just about ready to make the grand announcement that the place is up for sale! Woo hoo!

Off to finish that kitchen floor now! :)

Fourth Street Art Fair

Today and tomorrow are the days for the Fourth Street Art Fair, and I went today with Carla and Ann. I'd not met Ann before today, and .. what a neat person she is! We all had a really good time perusing the many artists' exhibits.

I loved the whole show, but my favorite stuff was the jewelry. I'd been long looking for a piece of something nice to hang from my gold collar necklace, and I found a strikingly beautiful pendant today! It has an opal, another stone from Australia that is yellow, and a peridot, all set in 14 and 18K yellow gold. I tried it on my collar and had to have it!

I also bought 3 photo prints of flowers, for which I'll find a place in my cottage. I have like.. no art in there now, so I will be able to find a place for them.

The day was warm, but not horrible, the sun shone, and there were vendors for drinks. We breakfasted at Village Deli, and lunched at Puccini's, laughed much, and didn't get back to Carla's till about 6.

Roy had made us pizzas, which he baked and we enjoyed with some wine. Perfect ending to a wonderful day!

And now this part is funny. I moved my bed out of there to put the carpet in, and so I needed to come up with another bed. I MADE this one out of boxes:

I've learned a lot

One thing that I've learned is how wonderful it is to have friends -- real friends -- upon whom I can rely and who can rely on me. And I have such great friends, don't I? :) And I include my family in this number, too, because I think that family who are also friends bless us doubly.

Karen and Dona, it's great to hear from you and to know that you're still following my blog. I write just as I talk, so, when we ultimately meet face-to-face, you'll feel like you already know me! And, after all we went through together, I don't feel like we're strangers. I'm glad you're both doing well. I find it interesting that you, too, gave up your dog, Karen. For me it was more a physical need. My little RV that I'm finding myself living in (as well as my cottage in Tucson) is just not big enough for a dog as big as she is. I was finding myself gone all the time and I could see sadness in her eyes, it seemed.

Annette, Robert, Becky, and DL.. you guys are great -- friends and family rolled into one.

And I'm happy to see my Photoshopping friends are still following me: John, Dorothy, Bonnie, Lynell, and Maxine! You folks have given me so much over the years, and I continue to wallow in all of your love.

So today was another day of panic and working, but mostly panic. I had the movers here, taking another load of stuff, including the huge bed, the dresser, recliners.. and some boxes. I do hope that they made it up to your place, Annette!

And then the carpet people came. The carpet looks fine, all except for a patch where they just left nothing between the bedroom and bath, where the carpet used to meet the tile. Now there is a 1" gap between the carpet and tile. I went to Lowe's and told the guy and he reassured me that the people would come and fix it and that I'd be happy. I am sure that I will be. I am not happy with it now, though.

I paced around a lot. I cleaned bugs out of the fan lights. I cleaned some paint off the kitchen floor. And then I went out and did errands. I cashed a check that Michael had gotten, and that's always an ordeal. "Well, why didn't he sign this?" And they have to go and check with someone to see if it is ok that I cash the check. What do normal people do when their husbands die? It seems that it shouldn't be such a rare event for these bank tellers!

I got flowers for my guest bathroom vases, I got cat food and litter at Petsmart, and I had a failed attempt to find a nice dress at TJ Maxx. I'm not sure who their market is at TJ Maxx, but it is most certainly not me, at least when it comes to clothes.

So I went to the mall and tried on things at Macy's, looked at things at some other places, and then went to Christopher & Banks. They had a little party going on with snacks and special sales for teachers. I didn't even use their special sale; the dress that I liked was on sale anyway - 1/2 price! Woo hoo! And it was just the thing that I wanted. Maybe I'll take a pic of myself in it for y'all. The other cool thing is that it'll go perfectly with the orange shoes and purse that I already have. (I'm one of those very rare women who doesn't go crazy for new shoes.)

One thing that makes me smile these days is realizing that no one in the stores really tries to wait on me anymore. It must be a demographics marketing thing. When I was 16 and couldn't afford anything, the sales people were all over me. Now I could own the store if I wanted -- well maybe not, but they don't know that -- and no one cares that I'm in there. I shop in peace.
